Konorchek Canyon

The Konorchek Canyons are located in the Boom Gorge, which connects the Chüy Valley with Lake Issyk-Kul. Here, small tributaries of the Chu River cut through thick sandstone layers, forming a gigantic labyrinth of sandy canyons. Exploring the entire maze in a single day is hardly possible, but getting a general impression certainly is. Under the destructive forces of water and wind, a great variety of landforms have formed here: narrow cracks, gullies, and rock pillars that impress with their scale and reddish hue reminiscent of landscapes in some American states. And all of this is easily accessible: the entrance to the canyons is located right next to the highway connecting the capital of Kyrgyzstan with the country’s main lake.

This section is short: simply follow the Issyk-Kul highway to your destination. The main entrance is located just before the Red Bridge, where the road crosses to the right (orographically, i.e. left in the direction of travel) bank of the Chu River. There is a sign pointing to the canyons and a small parking area near the railway crossing where you can leave your car. An alternative entrance is located about three kilometers earlier, shortly after the Ak-Ilbirs café.

IMPORTANT! Flash floods are particularly frequent in Konorchek due to the abundance of loose sandstones that are easily eroded by water. We do not recommend visiting during or shortly after heavy and prolonged rainfall. Sometimes you can tell that it is better to postpone your trip by the rusty color of the Chu River long before reaching Boom Gorge. Normally, the river has a pleasant bluish-turquoise color, but after rains enormous masses of sand — including from Konorchek — enter the water.

One of the photos below shows the aftermath of a mudflow: the entire gorge is covered with a thick layer of reddish-brown sludge that is impossible to walk on. If you see a similar situation at the entrance, it is best to leave immediately and head elsewhere. If heavy rain catches you inside the canyon, evacuate immediately and make sure you are not trapped in a narrow section during a mudflow.

Also note that in some places you will need to climb short but steep sandy slopes using fixed ropes. This requires basic physical fitness. Wear comfortable shoes, bring trekking poles, and be prepared.

It is difficult to define a single ideal route through the canyon: everything depends on your preferences and available time. The basic route runs from the main entrance to the central square, where impressive views of sandy cliffs and rock formations open up (green track). This section takes about one and a half hours.

From there, you can choose one of two main directions (turquoise or blue track), which lead into a labyrinth of gradually branching and narrowing gullies. The alternative entrance allows you to explore Konorchek from another side (purple track), but it is difficult to define a specific final destination there: the route stretches for dozens of kilometers into the mountains.

Both directions are connected by a dashed line marked on the map. However, since this path has not yet been completed by the author, it is not included on the map. In theory, this allows you to create a circular route from the main entrance to the alternative one (or vice versa), returning to your car via the highway.
