Kok-Moynok Canyon, like the Konorchek Canyons, is located in the Boom Gorge — the natural corridor connecting the Chüy Valley with Issyk‑Kul — but already within Issyk‑Kul Region. The geological structure of Kok-Moynok and Konorchek is similar: both were formed by the erosion of soft sandstone under the influence of wind and water. Kok-Moynok is more compact, and there are no long sandy corridors stretching for many kilometers. Thanks to this, the bizarre sandstone formations can be explored in just two or three hours.

To reach the canyon, drive along the Issyk-Kul highway to the turnoff to the Orto‑Tokoy Reservoir (the highway toward Naryn and Torugart Pass) in the upper part of Boom Gorge. Almost immediately after crossing the Chu River bridge, turn right again onto a dirt road toward the village of Kok‑Moynok‑2. In the village it is best to use a navigator so as not to miss several unobvious turns. The correct road continues downstream along the Chu River, sometimes running literally along the water’s edge. In general, the dirt road is passable for an ordinary passenger car, although caution is required in some places. The main entrance to the canyon is marked on most maps. There is a small parking area and a toilet, and an entrance fee may be charged. A few hundred meters before this main parking area there are several side tracks to the left of varying accessibility, leading to smaller but equally interesting valleys.

The route through the canyon is physically easy and does not require special preparation. The only thing to watch out for is heavy rainfall, which can quickly turn dry valleys into noisy streams. If the weather deteriorates, it is wiser to postpone the visit. In addition, the sandstone cliffs look far more picturesque in bright sunlight.

There is no single canonical route in Kok-Moynok. As you move deeper into the canyon, the main valley branches into increasingly smaller channels and side gullies. Choose your path freely — around every corner new natural wonders appear. The map shows the most popular track, several alternative routes, and one of the many possible viewpoints. The terrain is open, so any hill you can comfortably climb may serve as a viewing point.
