Ala-Kul (or Ala-Kol) Lake is located in a side valley of the Karakol Gorge, between the Karakol and Arashan valleys, at an altitude of about 3,500 meters above sea level. The most popular route between the two valleys passes by the lake, as the Ala-Kul Pass (around 3,900 meters) is located nearby. There are several spots near the lake suitable for camping, although spending the night here may not be very comfortable.
Ala-Kul (translated from Kyrgyz as “Motley Lake”) attracts travelers from all over the world and is famous for its ever-changing colors, reflecting the sky and the surrounding rocks, which are often covered with small patches of snow even in midsummer. The nature around the lake is сурова and picturesque: it is never hot here, and the weather can change within minutes. For an unprepared person, the ascent to the lake from the Karakol side (and even more so from Arashan) can become a real test of endurance and willpower.
