Karakol Gorge is located south of the town of Karakol and forms the valley of the river of the same name. It stretches deep into the mountains for many kilometers, ending at the snow-covered peaks of the Terskey Ala-Too range. The main gorge has numerous side valleys formed by tributaries of the Karakol River. In one of these side valleys, on the right (eastern) bank of the river at an altitude of about 3,500 meters above sea level, lies the high-mountain
lake Ala-Kul. Not far from the starting point of the trail to the lake is the Karakol alpine camp, which offers accommodation in yurts as well as convenient camping areas.
Many hiking and horseback routes pass through the gorge — both along it and across it: via tributary valleys you can reach the eastern valleys of Arashan and Ak-Suu or the western valleys of Jeti-Oguz and Chon-Kyzyl-Suu. The gorge is exceptionally scenic, featuring a remarkable diversity of landscapes, rich flora, and fauna. If you are in Karakol or planning to visit, we highly recommend at least a short walk in the gorge, or, if possible, a longer trek.
